The Interspace seat is an award-winning seating system that introduced a world-first to the premium economy cabin: privacy and lateral sleep support. The patented design uses deployable, cushioned wings to transform a standard upright position into a personal sanctuary. Now brought to life by Safran Seats, an economy variant is also in production.
Traditional airline seats force us to sit flat and face forward. Interspace changes this by hiding two cushioned wings inside the seatback. Passengers simply fold them out to create a soft, supportive sidewall. This shifts the entire posture of travel, allowing passengers to lean sideways and rest in a natural, comfortable position while enjoying instant privacy from the aisle.
Visually, the seat is designed to blend seamlessly into the modern cabin. When closed, the wings fold completely flat to maintain a clean silhouette. When deployed, stitched upholstery and soft sculptural lines elevate the entire space, making the economy cabin feel less like high-density transit and more like a high-end, contemporary lounge.
The journey from sketch to prototype required intense iteration and physical testing. Dozens of concepts and mockups were developed to fine-tune the geometry of the wings, ensuring they deploy effortlessly without compromising passenger space.
To achieve this, the system is engineered with a lightweight, custom composite core inside each panel. By replacing heavy mechanical hinges with a durable, non-mechanical joint, the seat is built to withstand the demanding conditions of commercial flight.
